“Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart” (MARION)

Hymn 312 in the Celebrating Grace Hymnal

The text for our November Hymn of the Month was written by theologian E. H. Plumptree (1821-1891), an Oxford College graduate and an academician whose poetry and hymns are both elegant and fervent in spirit.  The tune (MARION) was composed by Arthur H. Messiter (1834-1916) specifically for this text.  After he immigrated to the US, Messiter worked as a church musician and served as an editor of the Episcopal Hymnal (1893).  This hymn was commissioned for the Peterborough Cathedral’s annual choral festival in 1865 as the Processional Hymn, and is of particular beauty for the local congregation today as it invites old and young, woman and man, and those in sorrow and in gladness, all to “rejoice, give thanks, and sing!”
